WASSILY CHAIR

Designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925, the Wassily Chair, originally known as Model B3, is one of the most recognizable pieces of Bauhaus furniture.

Breuer experimented with tubular steel, transferring a material associated with industrial production and bicycle frames into domestic furniture. The chair is reduced to a lightweight structural frame supporting a series of suspended leather surfaces.

Rather than forming a conventional solid armchair, its construction separates structure and surface, leaving much of the volume open. The result is an object defined as much by the empty space between its elements as by the elements themselves.
