LA CHAISE

Designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1948, La Chaise was created for the Museum of Modern Art’s International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design.
Its sculptural shell was conceived as a continuous surface capable of supporting the body in a variety of sitting and reclining positions. The organic form is elevated above the floor by a lightweight steel structure connected to a wooden base.
La Chaise demonstrates the Eameses’ interest in combining new industrial materials with expressive, free-form geometry. More sculptural than conventional furniture, the chair blurs the boundary between functional object and three-dimensional form.
