Designed by Charles and Ray Eames around 1950, the Storage Units developed the same principles of modularity, flexibility and industrial production that informed much of their post-war work.
Built from a lightweight structure of metal uprights and horizontal elements, the system combines open shelves, drawers, sliding panels and compartments in different colors and materials. The composition could be adapted to different domestic and working environments, making the object both functional and visually dynamic.
The Eames Storage Units translate ideas of assembly, repetition and standardization into a highly recognizable furniture system. Their open framework and colorful infill panels create a balance between technical rationality and playful visual composition.
